Blue Scrappy Blocks

The scrappy color of the month of April at the SoScrappy Blog is BLUE.  Light and bright blue.

Here are my 4 blue blocks which are going to become a part of the rainbow colored quilt for my granddaughter.

The number of blocks for the quilt are accumulating slowly, but surely.  I now have 16 of the 20 needed.  I also started cutting the sashing strips.

I worked on quilts nonstop for the first three months of the year, but have slowed down some since the first of April.  My plan is to start pulling fabrics for another Christmas quilt for a Christmas 2021 gift.   I am thinking of more of a rustic cabin type quilt.  The fabrics will have some brown, beige and rustic reds in them.  I don't know if that makes sense!

Scrap Color of the Month - GREEN!

Over at the So Scrappy Blog, the scrappy color for March is green.

Here are my 4 green blocks for the quilt I'm making for my granddaughter.  This makes a total of 12 blocks - 4 each of pink (January), yellow (February) and green (March).

 

There are a few interesting fabrics.

February's Color is Yellow!

This month the scrappy color of the month on the SoScrappy Blog is yellow.  So here are four yellow blocks for my granddaughter's rainbow quilt. 

 

So, now I have 4 pink blocks and 4 yellow Blocks.  I'm anxious to see what next month's color will be!

Since these blocks are going to have borders between all the blocks along with corner stone squares around each block, I can start to work on that part of the quilt.  The fabric I am using as the borders is white with dots of all colors of the rainbow.  I'm looking forward to making this quilt come together.

Rainbow Scraps - PINK!

 I'm joining in the rainbow scrap challenge at SoScrappy and January's color was pink.  I am going to make my granddaughter, Victoria, a rainbow string quilt.  The blocks will not be laid out like this in the quilt, but here are the pink blocks I made this month.  I plan to do 4 blocks of 5 different colors.  I'm thinking pink, blue, yellow, green, and purple.  

February's color is yellow, so time to go through my 2 1/2 inch strips and pull out some yellows!

The Rainbow Double Irish Chain Quilt

I'm definitely a slow quilter! I'm not sure when I started this quilt, but its been at least 2 1/2 to 3 years. 

Here's the finished Rainbow Double Irish Chain Quilt and my first finish for 2020.  Wow, its almost July!

So what's next?

I've been doing some repairs on a couple of really old quilts for a relative and I'll be showing more about them in a future post.

But if you know me, you know I love scrappy quilts, or quilts made from clothes.  This is one of the quilts I am doing some work on and it has inspired me to make a similar quilt for my almost 13 year old grandson.  I envision the quilt with lots of plaids, stripes and light weight denim.

I think it would be an easy quilt to make, which always a bonus for the slow quilters like me!

Scrappy Rainbow Irish Chain - Green

Yesterday I worked on the "color of the month" quilt that I have had in progress for a while.  Sometimes I have worked on this quilt in leaders and enders fashion.  Yesterday it was the only quilt I worked on, and not as a leaders and enders project.  But soon I'll be working on some baby girl quilts for my expected granddaughter, so it will become a leader and enders project again.

Here are my stacks of 2 1/2 inch squares of green.  You know you love SCRAP quilting when you are digging through totes, and drawers and when you see the color of fabric you need, you get all excited!  "Oooh, there's a grreen I forgot all about."

I really enjoyed working on my favorite kind of quilts, the kind that use everything you have and each block is different. 

The two blocks needed are simple.  The first one has four 4 patches of the color of fabric you are working on, four 2 patches made up of one white and one colored fabric and one center colored square. The second block is made up of a center rectangle, and two strips on each side made up of a white strip and a colored square on each end.  I will give you the measurements of each piece at the end of this post, in case anyone is interested.

The finished quilt is supposed to look like this quilt found in the book called, "Adventures with Leaders & Enders" by Bonnie Hunter.  The measurements of my quilt are different though, in that I am using my 2 1/2 inch strips and squares and the one in the book is made of 2 inch squares.  I had to figure out the measurements needed to make it work, since I wasn't really following Bonnie's measurements.

Here are some of the blocks I have finished, just laid out on a bed on top of a white blanket.  Its starting to come together, but the pattern hasn't really emerged yet.  Once I add the second block to this layout the chain design will form.

Here are the measurements of the pieces:

Block one:
Finished block is 10 1/2 inches
Four patches and two patches are made up of 2 1/2 inch squares.
If you do strip piecing, the strips should be 2 1/2 inch wide.
You could also just piece the 2 1/2 inch squares into rows, with 5 rows.  Just place the white squares in the center of each outside row.

Block two:
Finished block is 10 1/2 inches
The center white rectangle is 10 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches
The white strips are 2 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches.
The squares on each end of the strips are 2 1/2 inches.
